Baltoberfest 2006

Maps / Directions

Getting to Baltimore:

Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI) in Maryland:   from the airport you can take a Taxi to downtown for about $25.   Another option is the Light Rail.  To catch it, go to the far end of Terminal E (International Pier) on the bottom level.  Step outside and pre-purchase your ticket at a machine for about $2.   As you travel downtown, the most central exit point would be Light Street station. (please check with your hotel for your specific details)

Amtrak Train:  Baltimore's Penn Station is about 2 miles North of the downtown area.  It is Amtrak's station in Baltimore.  All trains on the New York - Philly - Wilmington - Baltimore - Washington DC line stop here, they pass through almost hourly.  From the station,  you can catch a cab downtown for less than $10, or ride the light rail south to Light Street Station.

MARC Camden Line:  If you'll be coming from Washington DC on a weekday, please take the CAMDEN line from Washington's Union station, because that will take you to Downtown Baltimore, right next to Camden Yards Baseball Stadium.

MARC Penn Line:  If you take the PENN line from DC, well, it will take you to Penn Station.  That's about two miles farther north than downtown.  However, if you want to catch MARC train service from the BWI airport station, you can only ride the Penn line and you will end up at Penn Station.

Both MARC lines are Commuter trains, so they do not run on the weekends  You can track their progress live on http://www.marctracker.com.  If you want to go to Washington DC by train on the weekend, you must catch Amtrak at Penn Station.

Driving:

From the NorthEast.  Interstate 95 is the main North/South artery through Baltimore.  If you're coming from the North, you have two main choices of getting into the city.

1.  From I-95: Prior to the Fort McHenry Tunnel, take the Eastern Ave, O'Donnell St, or Boston Street exits and continue WEST about 4 miles to the city. Each one will get you to the same basic area, with different scenery at each.  These are 'safe' exits, you won't end up in any of the dangerous areas.   If you are staying in Fell's Point, or even on the East side of the harbor, this would be your logical option.
(If you are going directly to Events #2, #3, #4 or #6, begin with this direction)

2.  From I-95:  Stay on I-95 through the Fort McHenry Tunnel (after paying a $2 toll) and stay to the right.  Less than two miles after the tunnel, take the I-395 spur to downtown Baltimore.  This ends at Camden Yards Baseball Stadium, just prior to Light Street.
(If you are going directly to Events #1 or #5, begin with this direction)

From the North.  If you're coming down from Harrisburg or York, PA, you'll be coming down I-83.  It couldn't be much simpler for you.  Aside from I-83 joining the I-695 beltway for about two miles, it's a seamless drive.  I-83 ends on the East side of the harbor and becomes President Street, near Little Italy.

From the South.  Once again, all roads lead to I-95.  Once you're near the city (inside of I-695), look for the I-395 spur to downtown Baltimore.  This ends at Camden Yards Baseball Stadium, just prior to Light Street.  Another, more relaxed option from Washington DC is I-295 (AKA: The Baltimore Washington Parkway).  This will end downtown, on the other side of the stadiums, at Light Street.

From the West.  Take I-70 toward Baltimore.  When you get to the beltway (I-695), go south for a few miles, then pickup I-95 northbound.  Continue with  'from the south' directions above, once you are on I-95.

Getting around Baltimore:

The Water Taxi is a great way to get around the downtown area.  Unlimited transport for $8 per day.

Taxi's are easy to find in the city.

If you want pick-up service, Ellen has a favorite Taxi driver, his name is Bill the Taxi Man.  You can call him 24 hours a day at (443) 742-8698.  Tell him you know Ellen, or that you're here for 'Baltoberfest!'  He'll hook you up.

Walking:  This is the preferred method, especially if you staying along the water.  Baltimore has nearly seamless walkways that stay along the water all the way around...   The central core has elevated walkways that begin at Harborplace and move North and West.

Baltoberfest Event #1:  Baltimore Orioles Baseball Game

The Baseball stadium  is one of the easiest things to find in the city.  It's in the center of the city.  There is a dedicated Light Rail stop, and MARC train stop.   I-395 ends there, and nearly all roads lead there.

Baltoberfest Event #2:  Duckpin Bowling at Patterson Bowl

Water Taxi Stop: Landing 14, near Captain James Landing. But, you must transfer at Landing #11 to get to #14. Walk up one block on Boston Street, and the name will change to Chester Street to Eastern Avenue. Turn right, and bowling will be on your right. And, Kelly's will be directly across the street!

Baltoberfest Event #3:  Karaoke at Kelly's

See event #2 for general directions, but most of you will be coming from across the street.  We'll help you from there.

Baltoberfest Event #4:  Frank's Walking Tour

Current plans are to meet at the center of Fell's Point, at the southern end of Broadway, where it meets Thames Street.   In the days before Baltoberfest, more specific time-points will be selected where you can meet the walking tour while it's in-progress.

If you are driving, you can pre-position your car at LP Steamers and take the Water Taxi to Fell's Point, or Park here and take the Water Taxi to Fell's Point after the Crab Feast.

Baltoberfest Event #5:  VT Crab Feast at LP Steamers

If you join Frank's Walking tour, you'll eventually get there on foot.

Water Taxi: Tidewater Fuel Dock and Yacht Service. Walk up hill and turn left on Fort Avenue.

Baltoberfest Event #6:  Dancing at Latin Palace

From the Crab Feast, we can share cabs and cars to get to dancing.

If you've got a water taxi pass, you need to get off at Landing 11, Fells Point, and walk about three blocks up Broadway.
